Shepherds Pie is a nice potato dish made with beef or lamb and is a very hearty dish. I really love this dish for its simplicity and easiness of preparation. I grew up eating it and I’m sure you will enjoy this dish as well. Some like to bake it without cheese on top, but I just can’t not eat this with a cheesy crust on top.
Shepherds Pie Ingredients
Potatoes: They are the crowning glory to this dish and add a nice flavor to the dish. Use starchy potatoes like russet potatoes. You want to make mashed potatoes with to add it at the top of your pie.
Cheese: I use grated Gouda cheese. It adds a nice saltiness to the pie and is pretty mild in taste.
Onion: Yellow Onion has been the best choice for me. It adds a little spice to the sauce.
Carrots: Cut your carrots into thicker chunks and cook them with your sauce to make them tender:
Peas (Optional): Some like to add peas to the sauce, but I opted out of it, since I wanted to only add carrots for sweetness.
Beef/Pork: It’s up to you what meat to use. I chose Beef and Pork mix, since it was cheaper in the store and will give nice flavor for your Shepherds Pie.
Tomato Paste: I like to brown the tomato paste to add more depth to the sauce.
Tomato Sauce: Just a simple can of tomato sauce with chunks.
